WORKSHOPS & PANELS

And finally...

our workshops and panels.

All of the tickets are pay-what-you-can and the proceeds will go to a cause of the presenter's choice.

Experiential Scent Writing

This workshop treats perfume writing as the description of an interaction between scent and writer - the act of smelling something on purpose. Using this premise along with performance writing techniques taken from devised theatre, and fragrance samples from brands attending FUMED,  participants will learn new techniques for assessing and presenting fragrance to others, guided by their own taste. No prior fragrance writing experience or knowledge is required.

There are 2 sessions of this workshop. One on each day.

Crafting Culture: Translating Peoples, Places & Plants into Fragrance Narriatives

Fragrance is an intimate form of storytelling — a silent language and an olfactory experience that transports the wearer physically, emotionally, and mentally.
Join an innovative wave of visionary founders who are transcending the traditional boundaries of perfumery. This panel pulls back the curtain on their compelling creative process, exploring how these brands develop fragrance as an artistic language to illuminate identity, geographic memory, and heritage aromatic materials.
We will explore the alchemy of perfumery through a cross-cultural dialogue, focusing on how peoples, plants, and places are transformed into finished compositions. Our panelists will share how their distinct environments — from the vibrant cultural landscape of Harlem to the mighty Midwest, where rhythmic botanical inspiration in St. Louis and creative gender expression in Nebraska unfold, to global perspectives shaped by South Asian and Liberian culture — influence their brand origins and the power of fragrance for both personal identity and collective experience.
Together, we will discuss how fragrance embodies memory and meaning, while reflecting heritage and contemporary expression for the niche marketplace.

Discover their stories, explore their craft, and leave with a deeper understanding of the narratives you wear on your skin.

Fragrance as Ritual: A Conversation

Step beyond the bottle and into the soul of scent. Join Jeff Miller, co-founder of Free Yourself, alongside Terees Western, Perfumer and Scent Docent behind FragranTed, for an intimate exploration of fragrance as a transformative daily practice.
For the niche enthusiast, fragrance is far more than an accessory — it is a profound sensory experience, a tool for shifting mood, and a sacred act of self-expression. In this session, our panelists discuss how fragrance, as a simple routine, evolves into a meaningful ritual.
Come discover how to cultivate a more intentional, deeply personal relationship with the juices you wear.
Conversation will center on:
  • Defining the Ritual:  What's a ritual? How to connect to scent?
  • The Art of Incorporation: Practical advice on weaving fragrance into your wellness, mindfulness, and self-care practices.
  • Olfactory Storytelling: Jeff and Terees share the personal fragrance memories that shaped their creative journeys.
  • The Heritage of Beauty and Grooming: A look at the rich historical lineage of beauty rituals and how they continue to influence the modern niche industry.

The Archaeology of Smell and Perfumery in the Ancient Mediterranean

What did the past smell like and how do we know? Ancient olfaction is a relatively young addition to the field of archaeology. While the 1980s and 1990s ushered in a multisensory approach to the study of the past, the exploration of smell has only just begun. This talk examines how archaeologists reconstruct ancient perfumery from materials, production, and fragrance to how humans experienced these smells. We will visit ancient sites, read ancient texts, and discover modern biomolecular analyses to not only understand how perfumes were made and what they smelled like, but more importantly how perfumes were lived.
